Anna Davies

Born and raised in North Wales, Anna has been painting for as long as she can remember, and since graduating in 1991 has continued to explore and develop her own style. Returning to North Wales in 2023 after living and working in Nottingham, she takes her inspiration from the people around her. Mask-like public faces and practiced poses providing access to our inner lives and unnamed drives in private moments.

Her paintings are not usually representational. Using abstraction, distortion, and the behaviour and properties of her paint, she explores the traps and contradictions of the human condition, paring everything down leaving only that which is essential. She paints our longings and our anxieties. The paintings are arresting, possessing the intriguing capacity to hold your eye and lodge in your mind even while they arouse a sense of quiet unease.

Anna paints with oils on board, often incorporating elements of collage, and parts left over from one work will often form the starting point for the next… and so it continues.

Anna is always painting, refining her ideas, motivated by the sheer joy and necessity of exploration and creation. Her work has been exhibited in London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and across the UK. Her work appears in private collections across Europe and in India, America and Korea.

She appeared in an episode of Cymry Ar Gynfas on S4C where she painted Tudur Owen.

Anna Davies  has had exhibitions with us in 2022 and 2023. She returns with a new body of work in May 2025.
