Mandy Payne

Mandy Payne was born in Pontypool in 1964 and now lives and works in Sheffield. Her work is inspired by urban landscape and gentrification. She has a particular interest in Brutalist architecture and social housing estates. For her paintings, she employs materials that have a direct connection to the sites she depicts, namely concrete and spray paint.

 

She originally trained as a dentist, working in the Hospital and Community Dental Services for 25 years before making a career change to work as a full-time artist. She graduated with BA Fine Art (First Class) from Nottingham University in 2013. Since then, her work has been selected for numerous exhibitions and prizes including the John Moores Painting Prize, 2020, 2016 and 2014, (when she was a prize winner) and selection for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition on six occasions, between 2014-2019. Solo exhibitions include Manchester Modernist Society, 2021, Huddersfield Art Gallery, 2019/20 and Lakeside Arts Centre, Nottingham,2018.

 

Her work is held in public and private collections both in the UK and abroad. She is a member of the Contemporary British Painting group.
