Matthew Wood RCA was born in 1973 and trained at The School of Art, University of Wales. MA in Fine Art - Painting. Has exhibited at Theatre Clwyd, John Moores 25, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and Ffin y Parc Gallery.

The interiors he has created emerge from shadow, from stillness and from contemplation. In these unpopulated rooms with their diffused light and burnished surfaces, Matthew allows individual objects to sing, and draws out their relationships to their settings and surroundings. So despite the stillness and lack of people, there is no lack of drama or feeling. These patient, elegant paintings are full of yearning and melancholy.

Whatever his subject, there is a strong sense of suspension, of waiting for something to happen or of something happening just out of view, and often the whole picture seems to radiate out from one sharply observed detail: some chimney flashing, a distant line of wind turbines fragile as fishbones, a sagging seat-cushion or just the light skidding across a tiled floor.

"I paint on found and fabricated sections of board in one sitting in site specific locations. My work explores the environment whether it be constructed or natural. I am interested in a sense of place and atmosphere and the painterly depiction of space and distance."
