Pete Monaghan: Gwaith Newydd | New Works

12 September - 6 October 2021

Pete was born in Gloucestershire in 1961, and worked as an illustrator for twenty years. He now divides his time between his studios in Aberystwyth and Southern Germany. This new show with us marks his 60th Birthday.

His background as an illustrator informs his bold and clear paintings, and he is inspired by Welsh vernacular architecture. From initial sketches in the open, he refines and reworks his images in the studio, layering and covering, to create collages which are sophisticated as well as being evocative and affectionate. The resulting work projects a simplicity and economy that is the result of a keen eye for composition and telling detail.

Here also, still life paintings combine the vocabulary of advertising with the immediacy and power of shared memory. The works appear to be a mix of deliberate and apparently accidental marks. Sometimes they seem improvised almost, coming together and developing moment by moment, like jazz. But there is always control, balance, harmony.

He celebrates the beauty and dignity of the buildings and objects around us. He animates them, giving them voices and relationships with each other. Rescuing them from the invisibility of over-familiarity!

There is considerable muscularity and energy in the work, and an immediacy that is very refreshing.
