Gareth Parry: Gwneud Lluniau | Making Pictures + Book Launch

10 October - 3 November 2021

Dywed Gareth:

Am flynyddoedd lawer bum yn paentio yn gyfan gwbl yn yr awyr agored. Fel y crybwyllais sawl gwaith, dyma'r hyfforddiant gorau y gallwn fod wedi ei gael. Fe'm dysgodd i baentio'n gyflym gan ganolbwyntio ar yr agweddau pwysicaf. Byddaf hyd heddiw'n paentio'n gyflym a di-ymdrech gan adael i bob strôc ymateb i'r un o'i blaen tra mae'r gwaith yn datblygu. Mae'n debyg ei fod yn rhywbeth cynhenid neu naturiol - gwneud llun!

Ganed Gareth ym Mlaenau Ffestiniog ym 1951. Bu'n arddangos ei waith yn Llundain ac yng Nghymru am dros ugain mlynedd, a casglwyd ei waith yn helaeth. Yn 2006, fe'i etholwyd yn aelod o'r Academi Frenhinol Gymreig. Mae'r arddangosfa pwysig yma'n gyfle i ddathlu Penblwydd Gareth yn 70, ac rydym wedi gwneud llyfr argraffiad-cyfyngedig i fynd hefo'r sioe.

Mae greddf a phrofiad wedi rhoi iddo'r gallu i wneud beth a fynno hefo'r paent. Mae yna ddisgyblaeth a chywreinrwydd i ennyn esmwythdra. Ac eto, ceir yma, efallai, chwa o beryg ac yn bendant addewid o helynt. Mae yna'r ffrithiant a ffyrnigrwydd sy'n ganlyniad o'i aflonyddwch. Mae'r paent yn rhuthro'n orfoleddus bron ar draws y canfas, ac nid yw'r bŷd byth yn llonydd, byth yn hollol dawel.

Gareth says:

For many years I painted entirely outdoors. It was, as I often said, the best training I could ever have had. It taught me to paint quickly (but not for the sake of it!), concentrating only on what seemed to be the most important aspects of whatever I looked at. I would let the subject show me how it should be painted, as in fact, I do today. I still paint with the minimum of fuss, letting each brush stroke dictate what the next will do as a work develops. It is something innate or natural I suppose, making pictures!

Gareth was born in Blaenau Ffestiniog in 1951. He has been exhibiting in London and Wales for many years, and his work can be found in Public and Private Collections throughout the UK and abroad. In 2006 he was elected a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy. This major exhibition is to celebrate his 70th Birthday, and we have made a limited-edition book to accompany the show.

Instinct and experience have given him the ability to do what he wants with the paint. There is control and subtlety to put us at our ease. And yet, there is perhaps a whiff of danger and a definite promise of mischief. There is the drive and the heat that can come from restless impatience, even anger. The paint charges almost recklessly around the canvas, and the world is never quite silent, never still.
