This new collection is Dewi's first since he returned from a decade or so living and working in Tuscany. These works using pencils, pastels and inks are strikingly presented on rich dark paper.
The work appears like a collection of fragments of recovered dreams, or old photographic negatives perhaps. There are memories of childhood and of more recent times. Welsh farmhouses and Tuscan palazzi glow in the half-light, conjured from emptiness. Birch trees shine, translucent mists and skeins of birds are drawn across the sky.
There is nothing extraneous in these refined, muted works. With a delicacy and economy of line, Dewi draws us in to the particular moment, as brief as that cresting moment of equilibrium between breathing in and breathing out. He gives us evocations of calm reflection hewed from the noise and clamour of our lives and thoughts. The work is spacious and open. All is serene now. But everything is evanescent.
Dewi was born in1956. He trained in Caerfyrddin and Aberystwyth. He taught for many years before becoming a full-time artist in 2009. His works are popular and widely collected.
