For his latest show with us, Matthew has been travelling! He has made a collection of landscapes through the year, and interiors that are domestic, historical and commercial.
Whatever his subject, he is always observant and nimble, catching the fact and the feeling of the places where he waits and paints. His eye for the telling detail gives the work energy and quiet authority.
Snowy winter light, the clear light of spring, and the way the low clouds nibble at the tops of the hills on brief, dreary afternoons, all are caught, as well as the heat of Greece, captured from the welcome shade of a stone cloister.
The interiors are alive with the light from the doorway at the end of the hall sliding across gleaming floors and polished furniture. They offer glimpses of the wide, open world beyond these vacant rooms. Rooms that still hum with the energy of the people who have just left, leaving their specs on the table, and the dog waiting on the sofa.
Matthew has been exhibiting with us now for over 10 years. He has developed a large audience who appreciate his ability to bring these places to life. He has been selected for the John Moores exhibition at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool. He is widely collected. He was born in 1973 and completed his Art studies at Aberystwyth University. He lives and works near Welshpool
