Malcolm Edwards: Dreams & Realities

31 March - 24 April 2019

Malcolm tells us that this collection of 70 new paintings will probably be his last. Though he is quick to add that be can't ever see himself stopping painting altogether!

In these paintings, Malcolm's ability to distil the essence of the North Wales landscape is potent and undimmed. Painting in his studio, from sketches, memory and imagination, Malcolm creates work that combines meticulous and realistic detail with subjective, expressionistic elements. There is simplicity, artifice and considerable theatricality.

But more than this, there is a dialogue between visions of permanence and decay, a sense of the stoic acceptance of the passing of time, and a yearning melancholy. There are hawks in his big open skies scanning the landscape, riding the currents, contemplating departure. And there are empty patches, literal expressions of absence giving a glimpse, or hint or hope perhaps, of some kind of transcendence. These works possess grandeur and dignity.

Malcolm was born in 1934 and educated at Liverpool University. He has been exhibiting his work regularly for thirty years and his work is represented in many public and private collections across Europe and North America. He has been a member of the RCA since 1994.

Mae Malcolm wedi dweud wrthom mae hyn, yn ol pob tebyg , fydd ei gasgliad olaf. Er ei fod yn awyddus i ychwanegu nad yw'n gallu dychmygu rhoi'r gorau i baentio'n gyfangwbl!

Yn y lluniau, mae gallu Malcolm i ddistyllu naws unigryw tirwedd Gogledd Cymru yn  gryf ac mor ddisglair ag erioed. Wrthi'n paentio yn ei stiwdio, gan ddefnyddio brasluniau, atgofion a'i ddychymyg, mae Malcolm yn creu gwaith sy'n cyfuno manylder trylwyr a realistig gydag elfennau goddrychol a mynegiadol. Mae yna symlrwydd, deheurwydd a  cryn dipyn o theatr.

Ond yn fwy na hyn, mae yna ddeialog rhwng agweddau o barhauster a dirywiad, dealltwriaeth stoic fod amser ar drai, a chydnabyddiaeth o hiraeth. Mae'r hebogau yn ei awyr mawr agored yn archwilio'r tirwedd, yn troelli ar yr awelon, yn myfyrio ar ymadawiad.  Ac mae yna pytiau gwag, mynegiadau llythrennol o absenoldeb sy'n rhoi cipolwg, neu awgrym, neu gobaith efallai, o rhyw fath o drosgynoldeb. Mae'r gwaith yma'n llawn mawredd ac urddas.

Ganed Malcolm ym 1934 ac aeth i Brifysgol Lerpwl. Bu'n arddangos ei waith yn rheolaidd am 30 mlynedd, a ceir enghreifftiau o'i waith mewn casgliadau preifat a chyhoeddus ar draws Ewrop a Gogledd America. Bu'n aelod o'r AFG ers 1994
