Martin only began painting full-time in 2012, but has already found an enthusiastic audience, with successful shows in Wales and in London. His previous show with us was a near sell-out, and we are pleased to have a new collection of his work.
His subjects are familiar: the landscape of North Wales and the Gower peninsula, and he is rooted in the traditions of the 20th Century Welsh School. His palette knife is strong and bold enough to catch the monumental permanence of the landscape: a barely changing line along the ridge, the sullen brooding mountains shunning the sunlight and the buildings enduring patiently, crouching for shelter; but also swift and deft enough to catch the same mountains stretching and basking in unexpected summer heat, the breezes bouncing through the air and the light at sunset glancing off the incoming tide. His instinctive and straightforward empathy for the landscape gives his work considerable resonance.
Martin was born in Neath in 1963, where he still lives and paints.
