Mike Jones

15 September - 9 October 2019

Mike Jones was born in 1941, in Pontardawe where the Western edge of the South Wales coalfield gives way to the farming communities of Carmarthenshire and beyond. He is among the last of the artists, like Josef Herman and Will Roberts, able to observe these industrial communities before they began their long, slow, painful decline.

His subjects are his neighbours - the farmers and their wives, the working men and women. With great skill and economy, and with great affection, he suggests the characters and relationships that create and sustain a community.

The authority and sincerity of the work comes from his being an insider here, a life-long participant. He has known these people all his life. He knows how they live, and their secrets!

Ganed Mike ym 1941 ym Mhontardawe yn agos at y ffin lle mae glofeydd De Cymru yn cwrdd a chymunedau amaethyddol Sir Gaerfyrddin. Mae ef ymusg yr artistiad olaf, fel Josef Herman a Will Roberts a oedd yn bresennol i weld y cymunedau diwydiannol yma cyn iddynt ddechrau'u dirywiad hir, araf, terfynol.

Ei destun yw ei gymdogion - y ffermwyr a'i gwragedd, y dynion a'r menywod a'u llafuriau sy'n cadw olwynion y gymuned yn troi'n hwylus. Mewn ffordd medrys a chywrain, a gyda hoffter mawr, mae gnddo'r gallu i  awgrymu cymeriadau, a'r cysylltiadau rhyngddynt.

Mae cryfder a diffuantrwydd y gwaith yn ganlyniad o'i aelodaeth a'i gyfranogaeth gydol-oes o'r gymuned yma. Mae'n gwybod sut y maent yn byw, a'u cyfrinachau!
