Meinir Mathias

Meinir Mathias works with oil painting and intaglio printmaking techniques. Her work is rooted in Welsh culture and draws on historical events and folk imagery as they challenge the complex human relationship with land and its history.  Portraiture and figurative work entwined with symbolism from Welsh folklore and political protest feature in her work. Rendered in rich oil paint, colour and composition play an important role in her paintings as she brings a contemporary perspective to historical events and characters. Meinir further explores ideas in relation to Welsh identity which are linked to land, place, and memory.

Several of her paintings have been purchased by the National Library of Wales for the National Collection . Meinir was also awarded the People's Choice award at The Royal Cambrian Academy of Fine art recently and was featured in the Welsh Art Television programme 'Cymru ar Gynfas' (Wales on Canvas). Her piece 'Dwyly Gleision | Blue Hands, 2024' was the winner of the Ivor Davies Award, 2024. Lle Celf, Eisteddfod
