We have been showing Vivienne's work for some years now, but this substantial collection of Still Life paintings is her first show for us. It is also the largest collection she has ever exhibited.
The works develop gradually and emerge slowly. The consequence of careful layering of tones, deft arrangements of simple forms, and subtle variations of texture upon a flattened perspective. Everything is considered and meticulous.
The patience and deliberation that permeate these paintings give them a meditative, companionable feel. They speak quietly and gently. And yet they have an intensity and seriousness which is arresting.
Familiar domestic utensils appear repeatedly with fruit, leaves, eggs. Manufactured and natural forms echo and resonate. Repetition and elaboration give the work a sense of thoughtful intimacy. In their gentle profundity they feel almost devotional.
Vivienne was born in 1955 and studied English literature at University. Following years of travelling and working abroad, she began painting and now lives in South Wales. She became a member of the RCA in 2017. Her work is widely collected.
